Our Lady’s Square is one of the largest squares in Munich. The square has a very special location as it is located at the intersection of the city’s two main axes, considered to be the four ancient gates: the East-West axis between the Isar Gate & Karl Gate and the North-South axis between the Sendling Gate & Schwabing Gate.
Since 1972, the Square has been pedestrian-only, so just walking around the square will take you to see quite a few of Munich’s highlights.
In particular, every year at Christmas, the square is decorated with bright red decorations, symbolizing good things. So, if you have the chance, come here and experience this wonderful Christmas atmosphere!
4. Notre Dame Cathedral in Munich

The Cathedral of Our Lady, a beloved symbol of Munich, is located in the Old Town near the Place de la Dame. It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. The church is built in the Late Gothic style . The two towers have distinctive roofs of almost equal height; the North Tower is 98.57 m high and the South Tower is 98.45 m high. Visitors can see the two towers from afar and visit the South Tower, which offers panoramic views of Munich and the nearby Alps.
The Frauenkirche is one of the most recognizable churches in Germany. Together with the Town Hall, its elegant twin towers define the Munich skyline. It is therefore a great place to explore and enjoy views of the city.
5. St. Peters Church

St. Peter?s is not only a Roman Catholic parish church in downtown Munich , but also one of the state capital’s top landmarks. And there are good reasons for that:
View: The observation deck at St. Peters has a great view in all directions of course, including Marienplatz with the Town Hall (Rathaus) and Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) behind it.
City History: St. Peter’s Church is the oldest parish church in Munich with the oldest bells, and historically the first tower clock in the city. The weathered tombstones on the church’s exterior walls take visitors on a journey back in time.
Art treasure: The nearly 300-year-old Baroque high altar with its golden figure of St. Peter is one of Munich’s most famous ecclesiastical art treasures.
6. National Theatre Munich

The National Theater in Munich has gone through and witnessed many ups and downs of history. Since its foundation in the early 19th century, it has undergone three constructions and renovations due to fire and war. And it was not until 1963 that it was reconstructed with the original neoclassical design by Karl von Fischer, on a larger scale of 2,100 seats. The new stage has the third largest area in the world, after the Opéra Bastille in Paris and the Grand Theater, Warsaw. It can be seen that the National Theater in Munich has been rebuilt with a beautiful, unique appearance that attracts everyone’s eyes.
7. Charlemagne
Karlstor is one of the four main city gates in the medieval city walls of Munich . The walls here are famous and were used as city fortifications until the 18th century, and Karlstor is one of the great defensive structures and checkpoints along the walls.
Karlstor is located on Karlsplatz at the western end of Neuhauser Straße, part of the pedestrian network in the center of Munich , known as the salt road and the east-west road in the old town. It thus separates the historic center from the urban expansion in the 19th century. This is a destination with ancient beauty mixed with modern breath, one of the places that “selfie saints” must visit in Munich!
8. Michaeliskirche
