You will have to pay the following costs during your stay in Germany:

  • Semester Contribution
  • Living expenses (rent, food, clothes, books, phone, internet?)
  • Health Insurance
  • Tuition

1. Accommodation costs? rent (accounts for a large percentage of your total living expenses)

According to statistics, students in Germany spend an average of 850 euros per month on living expenses. Prices vary considerably between cities in Germany. You will need more money to live and study in Munich than in Leipzig, for example. Also, as a rule, living in smaller cities is usually cheaper than in larger ones. Of course, the amount of money you need also depends on your spending level.

Your biggest monthly expense will be rent. However, rent prices vary widely across German cities. Students typically pay between €290 and €560 per month for accommodation, depending on where they study. In some major cities, such as Cologne, Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main, rents are significantly higher than average.

Most students live in university dormitories or shared flats (WG). Having your own flat is usually very expensive. You will also usually have to pay a deposit when renting a house. The deposit ranges from 1 to 3 months rent.

2. Semester fee? Required

All students at university are required to pay a semester contribution. Please note that this contribution is not tuition fees. The amount of the contribution varies from university to university, as the services they provide to their students are not the same. On average, students pay around 250 euros to their university per semester.

Part of this contribution is for student welfare. For example, it funds student cafeterias, housing and sports facilities on campus. The semester contribution for student welfare can be up to 100 euros.

In some states, schools may also charge an additional administrative fee, ranging from 50 to 75 euros per semester depending on the school.

At many universities, this fee includes a public transport ticket, known as a “semesterticket”. This ticket allows you to use public transport in the area around your university for free for six months. Depending on where you live and how far you are allowed to travel, the ticket costs between 25 and 200 euros.

However, sometimes this ticket is not included in the semester contribution and you will have to pay separately. In this case, you can decide whether to buy this ticket or not. Because if you live close to the school, it is not really necessary.

3. Tuition fees

As a rule, universities in Germany do not charge tuition fees for bachelor’s courses and many master’s courses.

There is one exception : since the winter semester 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has started charging non-EU citizens tuition fees of 1,500 euros per semester (for undergraduate and master’s students). This fee does not apply to doctoral students. Students who have already started a study programme in the state of Baden-Württemberg but have not completed it by 2017/18 do not have to pay these fees.

Some special Master’s programmes and online courses do charge tuition fees and these can be very high. In some exceptional cases, they can even be more than 10,000 euros per semester. Private higher education institutions generally charge very high tuition fees.

However, in Germany the amount of tuition fees does not reflect the quality of education provided. Free education is also of very high quality.

4. Cost of health insurance

Public health insurance costs around 80 euros per month if you are under 30 years old or have not completed your 14th semester of study in your field of study. After that, the contribution increases to at least 160 euros per month.
