According to Statista research Q3 2020

In 2019, there were only about 32 million social media users in Germany, equivalent to 46% of the country’s population. But times have changed, as of January 2021, the number of social media users in Germany has skyrocketed to 66 million, equivalent to 78.7% of the total population, currently at 83.84 million.

According to the German digital association Bitkom, the use of social media platforms by German citizens has increased sharply due to Covid-19.  As Bitkom CEO Bernhard Rohleder explains: “During the time when face-to-face meetings are limited, social media helps people stay in touch with friends and family, follow public events and find entertainment.”

Indeed, since the outbreak of the coronavirus in Germany, 75% of Germans have used platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Xing and Twitter more intensively.

Top 5 social networks in Germany

1. WhatsApp

In first place in terms of social network popularity in Germany, WhatsApp , also known as WhatsApp Messenger , is a cross-platform messaging application, owned by Metaverse ? Facebook’s parent company, that allows you to send messages for free with the network available on your mobile device and without SMS charges.

WhatsApp supports multiple platforms such as iOS, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone. In addition to common features, WhatsApp can create groups, send unlimited photos, videos and music to members that users connect with.

The biggest advantage of WhatsApp is message security ? a core issue that Germans are concerned about.

WhatsApp has the ability to integrate end-to-end encryption into the app. This feature increases security against malicious users. This ensures that only the people who are participating in the conversation can see the conversation.

2. Youtube

While WhatsApp takes the title of the number one social media app, YouTube is the top social network in Germany for video sharing, with an average cumulative time spent on the platform per user per month of 12.6 hours. That’s double the time spent on the country’s second most popular video streaming app, Netflix.

What is Youtube?

YouTube is an American online video sharing and social media platform owned by Google, and is the second most visited website on a daily basis after Google. As of May 2019, videos are being uploaded at a rate of over 500 hours of content per minute.

In October 2006, YouTube was acquired by Google for $1.65 billion. Google’s ownership of YouTube changed its business model; it no longer generates revenue solely from advertising, YouTube now offers paid content such as movies and exclusive content. It also offers a paid subscription option to watch ad-free content, YouTube Premium.

Since its acquisition by Google, YouTube has expanded beyond its core website to include mobile apps, network television, and the ability to link to other platforms. Video categories on YouTube include music videos, video clips, news, short films, feature films, documentaries, audio recordings, movie trailers, trailers, live streams, vlogs,? Most of the content is created by individuals.

3. Facebook

Although it is the “king” of Vietnamese social networks, in Germany, Facebook only ranks 3rd in the list of social networks in Germany, behind WhatsApp and Youtube. However, with its large user reach, Facebook still attracts a lot of attention from German users, especially during the epidemic.

This is also the reason why most Vietnamese international students choose Facebook to easily make friends and contact family.

Facebook can be accessed from Internet-connected devices such as personal computers, tablets, and smartphones. After registering, users can create a profile with information about themselves. They can post text, photos, and other content to share with any of their friends on the site or other privacy settings publicly.

Users can also communicate directly with each other using Facebook Messenger , join interest groups, and receive notifications about the activities of their Facebook friends and pages they follow.

4. Instagram

Instagram is a social network that specializes in sharing photos and videos, so it is designed based on the creation of beautiful and attractive images. In recent years, Instagram has appeared and made many social network users even more passionate than Facebook.

The app also adds messaging features, the ability to include multiple images or videos in a single post, and a ?Stories? feature similar to major competitor Snapchat? with each post being viewable by others for 24 hours.

Although Instagram is not as prominent a social media presence in Germany as in other countries, it attracts nearly half of all internet users aged 16-64. There are many influencers in Germany with millions of followers, from rappers to business professionals and sportspeople who have Instagram accounts.

5. Pinterest

Pinterest is an image sharing and social media website designed to enable the saving and discovery of information (specifically ?ideas?) on the Internet using images and, on a smaller scale, animated GIFs and videos, in the form of pinboards.

The site, created by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp, lets you use Pinterest as a social networking tool, but not everyone does. In fact, Pinterest is more commonly used as an inspiration source for collecting ideas about home decor, travel, and fashion.

The remaining German social networks on the list such as Twitter , Xing or Linkedin  all have a fairly large number of users with a rate of around 20% and have the opportunity to surpass them in the future.

Tik Tok is growing strongly

Although growth has slowed, TikTok’s subscriber base has grown in a short period of time, attracting 10.7 million active users in Germany. According to a survey conducted in late 2020, nearly half of all TikTok users in Germany use the app daily.

And in the near future, Tik Tok is very likely to dethrone one of the above applications to enter the top 5 most used social networks in Germany. Let’s wait and see how the rankings of the top 5 most used social networks in Germany change!
